The Difference One App Made: How the AFL Talent Team Connected Their Programs
August 11, 2026 · Read Time: 4 mins
When you're managing a high-performance program across dozens of athletes at varying ages, scattered across the country, the margin for miscommunication is enormous. For AFL Talent Programs, the answer wasn't adding more staff or more spreadsheets, it was bringing everything into one place.
Since transitioning to the new Teamworks unified mobile app, an app that combines Hub, Strength & Conditioning (S&C) and Athlete Management System (AMS) apps, the program has seen a meaningful shift in how coaches, physiotherapists, high performance staff, athletes and even athlete families work together. Here's what that looks like in practice.
One App, One Source of Truth
For a program managing athletes of varying ages, many of them underage and on the path toward the elite game, having a single communication channel isn't just convenient, it's essential.
Having all of our communications done through Teamworks Hub is the most critical aspect of our use.
Meg McArthur, AFL’s Talent Competition Operations Lead
The platform has become the operational backbone for everything from daily scheduling to athlete wellbeing, replacing fragmented channels with a unified feed that everyone, staff, athletes, and families, can access.

A standout feature for youth programs has been the Guardianship function, which allows athlete’s families to have immediate visibility into schedules, communications, and program details. "Including them directly has been a great step forward for our work with youth athletes," the AFL team noted. For a program that views the athlete journey as a long-term investment, that kind of transparency builds the trust that elite pathways depend on.
High Performance Staff Can See the Full Picture Without Being in the Room
One of the most significant operational shifts has come through the integration of S&C and AMS data. While the full AMS experience within the unified mobile app is on the horizon for the AFL, practitioners already have access to a rich, consolidated view of athlete data on the web, and it's changing how the program operates day to day.
Athletes log their training through the S&C mobile app, and that data flows directly into AMS, where coaches and High Performance (HP) staff can monitor completed sessions, flag program modifications, and review athlete notes, all without waiting for a debrief or chasing down a staff member.
HP staff may not see athletes face-to-face for every gym session, so having visibility of what has been completed, any program modifications, and athlete notes significantly enhances the overall athlete experience.
The team explained.
With squad and individual-level dashboards, coaches can make timely, informed adjustments, with S&C plans broken into smaller groups or individual blocks based on role requirements, injury status, and development goals. But what makes this more than just a programming tool is the broader picture practitioners can access alongside training data: health records, availability status, wellness trends, and athlete notes all in one place. That context is what elevates the platform well beyond strength programming.
Physiotherapists have also been brought directly into the S&C ecosystem, giving them live oversight of injured athletes' programs and enabling tighter collaboration with HP staff on return-to-play outcomes. It's a level of collaboration that manual processes simply can't replicate.
The Moment It All Clicked: Pre-Ordering Dinner at an Interstate Camp

Meg McArthur said she realised the full value of the unified app when her team found a moment of operational calm in the middle of what used to be chaos.
Arriving into an overnight, interstate camp with players and staff from all over Australia and needing to organise pre-order dinner at a moment's notice has been a quick task to achieve thanks to having Teamworks integrated into our AFL Talent programs.
That's the kind of moment that tells you a platform has genuinely become embedded in how a team operates. The ability to gather information instantly from staff and athletes spread across the country, and act on it, has fundamentally changed the pace at which the program can move.
The Teamworks Hub Travel module has reinforced this. With features like trip duplication, mass editing, and the ability to message only the athletes and staff on a given trip, "busy periods of work [are] a lot more efficient for our staff managing them." In a national program where travel is constant, those efficiencies add up quickly.
Building Athletes Who Can Manage Themselves

Perhaps the most forward-looking part of the AFL Talent Programs' approach is the intentional focus on athlete development beyond physical performance. For a cohort transitioning toward elite football, learning to manage their own time and preparation is part of the job.
As they progress they need to learn to manage their own time and development, having one app for their organisation and their S&C needs has been a great step forward.
Consolidating scheduling, communication, S&C programming, and travel into a single mobile experience means athletes aren't just passive recipients of instructions. They're learning to operate the way professional athletes do, proactively, independently, and with full visibility of what's expected of them.
Real-Time Collaboration & Connection
For AFL Talent Programs, Teamworks isn't just a communication tool or a training log, it's the connective tissue of a high-performance environment that spans the entire country. From family communication for youth athletes to real-time physiotherapy collaboration to last-minute logistics at interstate camps, the platform has earned its place as the operational core of the program.
