At Davidson College, basketball is more than a sport. It’s a legacy. The program that helped shape NBA superstar Stephen Curry continues to innovate both on and off the court. Today, Curry has returned to his alma mater as Assistant General Manager for Davidson men’s and women’s basketball, joining fellow alum Matt Berman in supporting the program’s next era of growth and success.
“Not every day you get to have one of the greatest basketball players of all time and the greatest shooter of all time on your front office staff and a part of the program… his buy-in to the program and his belief in Davidson basketball is incredible.”
Leading the strategic and operational evolution of Davidson basketball is Austin Buntz, Assistant Athletic Director for Basketball Development and General Manager for both programs. Tasked with overseeing fundraising, NIL, and revenue sharing, Buntz sits at the intersection of tradition and transformation, ensuring Davidson remains ahead of the curve amidst a shifting college athletics landscape.
“I have been at Davidson a little over four years now, and my role is overseeing fundraising for basketball at Davidson and then handling all of the new landscape college athletics items and how it pertains to our athletic department and Davidson basketball. I manage all of our revenue sharing and NIL and that whole process with all of our student athletes.”
For Buntz and his team, embracing innovation meant finding the right technology and data to manage this fast-changing environment. That search led them to Teamworks General Manager (GM) and Teamworks Wallet — two solutions that have helped Davidson centralize operations, streamline payments, and stay focused on building a championship program.
The Challenge: Managing a Rapidly Changing Landscape
Before partnering with Teamworks, Davidson’s basketball operations relied heavily on spreadsheets and manual workflows – a setup that quickly became unsustainable as the NCAA landscape evolved. Different staff members held critical information, creating inefficiencies and communication gaps that slowed operations.
“Before we partnered with GM, [everything] was all through spreadsheets and different people had different information, and [GM] allowed us to consolidate everything into one place. It’s the perfect database to keep everyone together, especially with how quickly things change now in the landscape and how quickly we’re operating with our teams and our coaching staff.”
As NIL and revenue-sharing models developed, the stakes grew higher. Managing payments, compliance, and legal processes manually was no longer an option. Davidson needed a secure, centralized system that could scale with the program and meet new operational demands.
“The biggest challenges in managing our operations pre-GM and Teamworks was everything was still outside of the school at that point with our collective at the time. And then as the settlement was coming into play, we knew we had to bring a platform on board to help us manage everything.”
Having already seen success with other Teamworks products, Davidson recognized that GM could provide the structure and adaptability they needed.
“We had already partnered with Teamworks for a number of their other products. So it was the natural choice to go with GM, especially to be one of the first schools to sign on early and to have that ability to share our feedback and be a part of the process as it was built out.”
The Solution: Centralization and Seamless Payments
The implementation process with Teamworks was smooth, efficient, and collaborative, setting the tone for an effective long-term partnership.
“Implementation and onboarding were very seamless. We had weekly meetings at the time with Teamworks. There was always constant communication, feedback, and prompt follow-up if we ever had any issues or questions. I can’t say enough good things about the entire process. There were never any issues or headaches at all.”
Once live, Teamworks GM quickly became the backbone of Davidson’s operations. By connecting key departments, from compliance and legal to business operations and coaching, the platform ensured everyone was aligned and working from the same information.
“Teamworks GM enables our staff to not waste any time with the revenue sharing process. There’s a lot of people who get involved across campus from legal to the business department to the coaching staff… This product allows everybody to work together.”
In addition to GM, Teamworks Wallet became an integral piece of Davidson’s payment process, ensuring fast, secure, and confidential athlete payments.
“Teamworks Wallet allows us to pay our student athletes promptly and successfully every single time. You don’t need to get too many other people involved across campus. It allows you to keep the circle of revenue sharing tight, which I think, with confidentiality and dealing with student-athletes, is very important. Every single time we use it, it allows one or two people to be involved, and payments come instantly as you need them.”
Together, GM and Wallet transformed Davidson’s back-end operations, replacing complexity with clarity and empowering staff to stay focused on their mission.
The Results: Efficiency, Security, and Competitive Focus
Today, Teamworks GM and Wallet are central to Davidson’s basketball operations. The platform has allowed the program to plan more effectively, streamline collaboration, and move faster in an industry where speed and precision are essential.
“GM allows us to budget effectively. We’re able to plan out years in advance. We’re able to change on the fly if we need to, but it allows us to just keep everything organized.”
In a basketball-first conference like the Atlantic 10, that organization translates directly into competitive advantage.
“Especially in the Atlantic 10 Conference, all of our member institutions are basketball-centric and Teamworks GM allows us to keep everything centralized and focused on basketball and have them operating as efficiently as possible and allows us to focus on winning and building a championship program.”
And with Teamworks as a trusted partner, Davidson feels confident that they’ll always stay ahead of the curve.
“The landscape is shifting daily… we have full trust in that as the landscape changes, Teamworks will change with the landscape as necessary to put us in the best position possible to be successful.”
Advice to Other Programs
For schools exploring Teamworks GM, Buntz’s advice is simple and decisive:
“Don’t overthink it. Go with GM. They are leaders in the space as Teamworks has been all along, rapidly growing and on top of everything that’s changing. Their response time is always prompt. They’re a friendly partner to work with, and they’re going to be around for a long time in this industry.”
He also emphasizes the importance of full adoption to maximize impact:
“To get the most value out of Teamworks GM you need to commit to it. If you really dial in and commit to GM, it’s going to put you in the best position possible to be successful moving forward.”
With Teamworks GM and Wallet, Davidson College has built a unified, secure, and future-proof operational framework that simplifies complex processes, strengthens collaboration, and keeps the program focused on championship goals.
As Austin Buntz and his team continue to lead in this new era of college athletics, with legendary alum Stephen Curry back in the fold, Davidson is proving that innovation off the court is just as important as performance on it.
