Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB) is setting the standard for what it means to leverage technology in collegiate athletics, particularly within Division II. As the only Division II school to onboard six products from Teamworks—Hub, Influencer, Pulse, Compliance + Recruiting, Inventory Management, and Camps—CSUSB is pioneering the integration of technology to enhance athletic and administrative excellence.

Leading on the Court and in Technology

CSUSB is known for its athletic prowess, with nine out of ten varsity sports making it to the NCAA championships in the last two years. The university’s commitment to athletic excellence extends beyond the competitions, with a strong focus on administrative support. Shelby Stueve, Senior Associate Athletic Director/SWA, emphasizes this dual commitment: «If our coaches are going to lead on the court, we also need to match that administratively, ensuring we’re providing them the support they need to pursue success in all of our sports.»

Athletic Director Shareef Amer shared the department’s forward-thinking vision: “At CSUSB, we push our staff, coaches, and student-athletes to strive for greatness every day. Ultimately, you need to provide the resources that empower your team to meet the demands and expectations you’re placing upon them. By investing in this suite of Teamworks products, we are doing exactly that.”

The Journey with Teamworks to Full Integration

CSUSB’s journey with Teamworks began with the transition from Front Rush to Compliance + Recruiting (formerly ARMS) after the acquisition. Initially, the plan was to adopt just this one product, but the department quickly recognized the benefits of a fully integrated suite. “We were looking at something to track inventory, help with NIL, and do anonymous reporting and surveys,” explains Stueve. “I suggested we evaluate Teamworks as a potential software because it connects all of those pieces together.”

Now, as the first Division II institution to utilize six Teamworks products, CSUSB is leading the charge. This comprehensive adoption has not only streamlined administrative processes but also ensured that the university’s technological infrastructure is as robust as its athletic programs.

The Power of Integration and Efficiency

One of the standout benefits for CSUSB was the power of integration and its impact on driving efficiency and enabling administrators to focus on what truly matters: impacting the lives of student-athletes.

Curtis Fraser, Assistant Athletic Director for Communications and Brand Management, highlights the importance of having a centralized system: “Having all our information in one place is a game changer. It means we’re not wasting time chasing down details or trying to remember which system holds which piece of information. It makes us more efficient as a department.”

Why Hub Matters to CSUSB

Teamworks Hub, in particular, has been a game-changer for CSUSB. It serves as a communication and travel tool, where everything is at the fingertips of both administrators and student-athletes. From checking itineraries to ensuring forms are filled out, Hub simplifies and centralizes these tasks, allowing for more meaningful interactions between administrators and athletes.

«Hub for CSUSB will allow us to consolidate, streamline, and maximize transparency across the entire athletic department.» Shelby Stueve, Senior Associate Athletic Director/SWA.

Budget Considerations: Investing in What Works

While budget is often a significant barrier for Division II and III schools considering such technology, CSUSB recognized the value in investing in systems that truly work. «You can’t put a price tag on systems that work well and that student-athletes actually engage with. We evaluated our options and realized that having one integrated system was far more beneficial than managing multiple disconnected platforms,» said Stueve.

Adapting to the Evolving Landscape

The dynamic nature of collegiate athletics requires institutions to be adaptable. With technology playing an increasingly central role, having a centralized platform like Teamworks allows CSUSB to effectively transition new hires and stay ahead in an ever-evolving space.  «Having one place that holds all our information is incredibly helpful. It’s a one-stop-shop that allows us to maintain consistency and efficiency, even with staff turnover,» said Fraser.

CSUSB shines on the court and is leading the way in how Division II schools can leverage technology to enhance athletic and administrative success. CSUSB is not just keeping up with the demands of modern athletics—it’s defining what it means to excel.
